Malawi VIBITAC Clinic

The area around Kande on Lake Malawi, Central Africa is home to 23,000 people. This area is known locally as ‘Mortuary’ as so many people die of treatable diseases and illnesses.

In 2003 Graham and Ruth Swaffield (as part of Links International Trust) helped set up a small First Aid clinic which is run from a very small room in the grounds of VIBITAC (Vision Bible Training and Accommodation Centre) - an interdenominational organisation. Vibitac is registered with the Malawian Government, as are the owners and operators of the clinic.

Graham and Ruth were horrified at the lack of good health care and the ordinary, treatable illnesses that people were dying from. The clinic started as a help to the local population as they could not get or afford treatment at the nearest Government clinic. There are very few drugs available.

At present the clinic is run by one volunteer with basic First Aid training. The VIBITAC clinic now has a contract with a medically trained, Kingsley Makwale, who will work at the clinic when the building is completed.

Clinic worker

It is our aim along with the trustees of VIBITAC to have a building for the clinic which is purpose-built to a high standard. It will conform to the necessary government regulations. The District Health Officer has given his permission and encouragement to see this clinic project fulfilled.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. The average age at death is 41yrs. Mortality rates at child birth are amongst the highest in the world. Malaria and HIV/Aids are the main causes of death in Malawi. The need for primary health care is very evident and the clinic will be able to deal with all types of sickness and also give health education.

The latest news

The latest news is that building is upto roof level and we now need money (£6,000 ) to put the roof on before the rainy season starts again.
